IMAGESCHRISTOPHE MORIN/IP3 Facebook confirmed on Friday a new data breach affects 50 million of its users, reports the New York Times. Unidentified hackers were able to manipulate the social network's code and log into scores of user accounts, the company discovered earlier this week. Facebook is currently in the early stages of an investigation probing the origins of the hack and its scale. As a result of the breach, 90 million users were forcibly logged out of their accounts on Friday morning, the company confirmed to the Times. The measure was strictly precautionary and follows normal protocol when large troves of data are compromised. Facebook has recently faced continuous scrutiny over many aspects of its business and ability to safeguard its users' information. Just yesterday, a new report surfaced detailing the company's deceptive ad-targeting practices involving users' mobile address books. CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before the Senate's Commerce and Judiciary committees earlier this year concerning the spread of misinformation on the platform during the 2016 presidential election. Zuckerberg was also grilled by the Senate concerning the Cambridge Analytica data-mining scandal that saw 87 million people's account credentials compromised. This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available. Source: New York Times Watch Next Driving a Truck Full of Supplies Into Lumberton, N.C. Play VideoShare
